Several districts in Gujarat are flooded. One of the worst hit are the indigenous salt pan workers (Agariya community) with whom AID and its partners have been working. AID is sending $10,000 from its All India Relief Fund (AIRF) to help the Agariyas of Gujarat start community kitchens and strengthen relief activities. Please contribute generously in this time of need. All donations to AID are tax-deductible.Donate
Note from AID partner Janpath on the impact of floods on the Agariyas of Gujarat:
Our Agariya villages are very badly affected. Sharing some updates from there.
– Rajusara village falls very near to Banas river. Entire village is filled with water ranging from 2 feet to 5 feet. Even elevated roads which normally were used for taking shelter during floods are also of no use this time. Rescue operations are being carried out by Agariya youth leaders….
Fortunately no loss of life. But houses have been damaged. Around 2500 people are currently staying in Agariya hostel in Santalpur – Khimasar village.
Food packets are arranged by Agariays as these areas are now cut off from other areas. We are arranging for food items and will start community kitchen…
Due to heavy inflow in Banas river, few villages of this districts are also in high alert. Women and children have already been shifted to other villages.
Few houses (kacha houses) are damaged due to floods.
Maliya region is very heavily affected. Water was released from machhu dam Macchu 2, and macchu 3 dam which lead to heavy floods in these areas.
People were rescued from around 10 villages and hamlets. Food packets are arranged by few organisations . Hanjiyasar, khursi, jakarta, hari par and proper maliya are worst affected.
Kutch is on high alert from today onwards. Our agariya leaders could not be contacted as this area is completely cut off today.
Over all in Gujarat Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Surendranagar, Patan, Mehsana , Ahmedabad very badly affected.
Will require support from AID and friends for relief and rehabilitation phase…
