About the speakers:
Tara Ahluwalia from Bal Evam Mahila Chetna Samiti (BMCS), Rajasthan
Tara Ahluwalia has been working in the Bhilwada district of Rajasthan since 1986. She started as a social-worker in UNICEF funded “Women’s Development Program”. Tara holds degrees in Psychology and Social Work, has authored many articles on women’s issues & has written a book on Witch-hunting. She continues her fight to raise awareness about violence against women in every form: female foeticide, dowry deaths, domestic violence, rape, etc. Her work with witch-hunting survivors has led to the Govt. of Rajasthan drafting the “Dayan Virodhi Act.” She is currently working to educate UNICEF and other organizations about “Natha-Pratha.”
Prita Jha, Founder & President of Peace and Equality Cell( PEC), Gujarat
Prita Jha is a legal activist, researcher, trainer and writer on issues of gaps in policy and implementation of laws to secure justice for survivors of communal, domestic violence, gender based violence and child sexual abuse. She has delivered trainings and acted as resource person to a diverse range of participants from children and women in different communities, educational institutions, police, judges and NGO activists. She provides legal services to survivors of structural violence confronting the multiple social obstacles of class, religion, caste and gender.
PEC has made very effective intervention on the issue of poor state of women’s shelters in Gujarat by filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). This has led to the state being ordered to draft a new set of rules for all Shelters in Gujarat.
