Vidarbha: Elderly Women send Video Appeals for Rations

Elderly women who have found themselves with neither rations in their cupboards nor money to buy are desperately hard hit during India’s lockdown.  While distributing rations to those in need, Yogini Dhalke of Srujana, part of the Mahila Kisan Adhikar Manch working with AID support to distribute, reported that the situation was so dire that they could not reach all the people at risk of starvation.

In Karanja block, Washim district of Vidarbha region, activists recorded video messages as women appealed for help.  Although these women are eligible for government pensions, they have been in arrears for years.  Some have resorted to begging for food, which is unreliable at best, and impossible during lockdown.

MAKAAM reports that local officials have responded to these video messages with delivery of rations.
