It takes a village

It takes a village to raise a child. Let us strengthen our villages.

In Tamil Nadu we plan to focus our efforts in 100 villages spread across the state.  We have identified the first 25 villages from the districts of Sivagangai, Dindigal, Chengalpet, T.V. Mallai, Thiruvallur, Cuadalore, Pudukkottai, Coimbatore and Ranipet.

Below are pictures of E. Valaiyaappatti Amman Nagar village/settlement in Singampuneri block of Sivagangai district, and details of the current conditions.

Four years ago, the families living here secured land pattas (land titles) from the government, and installed electrical posts. However, despite these provisions, they do not have access to electricity and drinking water. Families are using old sarees as roof and boundary of the huts. The main occupation of the community is doing street plays in the better off sections of other villages. Younger people find labor work in nearby Villages.

We have begun helping families secure entitlements from the government.  There are 22 children (total population is about 75) who we are inspiring to attend school and we are exploring initiating an after-school center, establishing a kitchen garden, and implementing livelihood efforts.

Our focused efforts, supplementing the initiatives of these families, can change the destiny of the inhabitants of this village, and is a part of the jigsaw puzzle of 100 focus villages or pieces that when put together can reveal a trasforming image of Tamil Nadu, and a vision for villages across India.
