Standing with migrant workers in Haryana

Aman Ki Pahal, our partner in Haryana, has been working to provide relief to people affected by the Covid-19 lockdown. Previous updates on their work can be found here.

Update  – May 10 2019

Ration: Aman ki Pahal has been working to provide dry ration to migrant workers and people in distress in Durga Vihar, Bara Quarter Basti and nearby small pockets of ward number 2 in Faridabad district of Haryana state. They have supported around 600 families in total with multiple rounds of rations. Bara Quarter Basti is home to bamboo artisans, garbage sorters, rickshaw pullers or wage labourers. Durga Vihar houses mostly daily wage laborers who are engaged in construction or work in hotels, dhabas, or in a sewing factory.

Masks:  Masks were distributed to people in Durga Viha and Bara Quarter Basti.  These masks were stitched under an initiative by Silaiwali – A social enterprise working with Afghan women refugees currently living in Delhi

Efforts with Govt.: Their efforts with government have been continuing since the beginning. In Faridabad, Haryana government has introduced an app named Jan Sahayak, where registered people will receive 1,000 INR directly into their bank accounts. In different localities, they have helped people download this app and fill their need of dry ration. Nearly 400 families have now registered on the app with their help.

Dialogue with Migrant Workers in the area:  There is genuine fear among the workers and labourers that this lock down will go on for a long time, since the area has COVID-19 positive cases, and they’d be left at the mercy of other people. They are under enormous emotional distress and even those who tried to stay are now planning to leave or are already on their way. AKP has been orchestrating small meetings around several blocks of Shiv Durga Vihar to listen to their woes and help them. They have informed more people about the Jan Sahayak app and helped them download it on their phones.  They have also helped the people draft a letter to the District Commissioner demanding that they be provided rations through the lockdown.
