Environmental Policy Student Talks with Farmers Going Organic

Josh Locke spent a month interning with the Center for Sustainable Agriculture in Hyderabad. During his stay he met farmers who were transitioning to organic agriculture and talked to them about their experiences.

In his words:

“My experience at the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture was a deep insight into the workings of a non government organization as well as into the challenges facing Indian farmers. I enjoyed my time there, despite not feeling capable to play any major role in the work the organization did.  Though I felt somewhat lost when I first arrived, once I was given a task to complete (the report), the assistance and commitment of my colleagues there was brilliant and they did their best to help me collect data and construct a report.

“Thank you for the opportunity to get involved with this organization, they are doing some great work and I feel grateful to have been involved with them.  Visiting farmers striving to pursue organic in 3 different areas and conducting interviews with them was challenging, rewarding and very encouraging. I saw the benefits that the CSA’s work was having on the lives of Indian farmers, through improving their economic well being and the physical health of them and their families through organic production and consumption. I also came away from the experience with an increased understanding of the importance of organic to less economically developed countries, and the ongoing damage and exploitation caused by large multinational corporations to the agricultural sector.”
His report is available here.

Josh Locke studied Geography at Hull University and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Environmental Policy.
