Ensuring the Stranded are not Alone

Kondal Reddy receives calls from people asking help for migrant workers stranded in various parts of Andhra and Telangana, and works the phones till he can find someone to deliver supplies and offer reassuring words, especially to those who are from out of state and speak a different language.  Here is his own account of how he connects people to ensure that migrant workers stranded away from home, are not alone. An English translation follows.

కొన్ని సార్లు మనకు ఉన్న నెట్ వర్క్ ఆపదలో ఉన్న కుటుంబాలకు అండగా ఉన్నదంటే చాలా సంతోషంగా ఉంటుంది. ఈ రోజు అలంటి సంఘటనలే మూడు జరిగాయి.

1.” మొదటి సంఘటన” :నిన్న రాత్రి 10.30 తర్వాత కిరణ్ అన్న నుండి కాల్ వచ్చింది. విషయం ఏమంటే కృష్ణ జిల్లా గుడివాడ కు సమీపం లో శ్రీకాకుళం జిల్లా నుండి వచ్చిన 93 మంది వలస కూలీలు చాలా ఇబ్బందులలో ఉన్నారు వారు వారి గ్రామాలకు వెళ్తుంటే లాక్ డౌన్ కారణంగా వెల్ల నివ్వటం లేదట.మనకు అక్కడ ఎవరైనా తెలిసిన వారు ఉంటె వారి దగ్గరకు వెళ్లి వారికి 10 రోజులకు కావలసిన నిత్యావసర వస్తువులు అందించి వారికి మానసికంగా కొంత ధైర్యాన్ని ఇవ్వగలిగే వారు కావలి అని ఫోన్ సారాంశం.అప్పటికి దాదాపు రాత్రి 11 అయ్యింది, మచిలీపట్టణం లో ఉన్న ఒక మిత్రుడికి కాల్ చేసాను, అప్పటికే ఆలస్యం అయ్యింది కాబోలు ఫోన్ లిఫ్ట్ చేయలేద. ఇంకొక మిత్రుడికి కాల్ చేశా స్విచ్ ఆఫ్ వచ్చింది.సరే అని అదే జిల్లా నూజివీడు లో ఉన్న ఇద్దరు మిత్రులకు ఫోన్ చేశా, సరే ఇద్దరు స్పందించారు, ఇద్దరి నుండి ఒకే సమాధానం, ఇప్పుడు ఉన్న పరిస్థితులలో మేము 60 నుండి 70 కిలోమీటర్లు ప్రయాణం చేయటం చాలా కష్టం అడుగడుగునా పోలీసులు ఉన్నారు.గుడివాడ దగ్గరలో మా మిత్రులు ఉన్నారు.ఉదయాననే కాల్ చేస్తామని చెప్పారు. అక్కడ వారికేమో ప్రతి పూటా ఇబ్బందిగా ఉందట, ఉదయం 7 నుండే ఫోన్లు చేయటం ప్రారంభించాను. ఒక మిత్రుడు గుడివాడ సమీపం లో ఉన్న తన ఇద్దరు మిత్రులను పరిచయం చేయగా వారు 93 మందికి 10 రోజులకు తగిన సరుకు కొని ఒక ట్రాలీలో వేసుకుని వెళ్లి వారికి సరుకు అందించి, మేమున్నాము మీరు ఏమి కంగారు పడవద్దు, పరిస్థితులు అన్ని బాగైనా తర్వాత బయలు దేరుదురు అని చెప్పి వచ్చారు. వారికి ధన్యవాదాలు తెలిపితే మీతో కలిసి పని చేయటం సంతోషంగా ఉంది భవిష్యత్ లో కూడా కలిసి పనిచేద్దాము అని అనటం మాకు మరింత సంతోషాన్ని ఇచ్చింది.ధన్యవాదాలు రాజేష్,వంశీ,ప్రభు కుమార్.

2. “రెండవ సంఘటన”: గుంటూరు జిల్లా అచంపేట మండలానికి వేల సంఖ్యలో సుగ్గీ (వలస) కార్మికులు మిరప పండు తెంచటానికి వస్తుంటారు. వారిలో లాక్ డౌన్ కారణంగా అనేక మంది తమ స్వంత గ్రామాలకు వెళ్లలేక ఇబ్బంది పడుతున్నారు. ఇదే ఒక బాధాకరమైన విషయం అంటే మరింత బాధాకరమైన విషయం ఏమంటే 52 వలస కార్మికులు కుటుంబాలు చిన్న గుడిసెలు వేసుకుని ఉండే ప్రాంతంలో అగ్ని ప్రమాదం జరిగి ఆ ఉన్న నిత్యావసర వస్తువులు కాస్తా కాలిపోయాయి.స్థానిక రైతు స్వరాజ్య వేదిక మిత్రులు నరసింహ ఈ కుటుంబాల సమస్య మరీ దారుణంగా ఉంది. ఎవరైనా ఆదుకుంటే బాగుంటుందని మెసేజ్ పెట్టాడు.వెంటనే లండన్ లో ఉండే భానుప్రియ గారు స్పందించారు. ఇక్కడ ఒక విషయం ఏమంటే బాను ప్రియ గారు గత సంవత్సరం పది రోజుల పాటు ఈ సుగ్గీ(వలసలు) గురించి గుంటూరు, కర్నూల్,కడప,ప్రకాశం,అనంతపురం ఇలా జిల్లాలు తిరిగి చాలా అధ్యయనం చేసి ఇండియా స్పెండ్ అనే పత్రికకు చాలా పెద్ద స్టోరీ రాశారు.ఈ సుగ్గీ భాదలు చూసిన భానుప్రయా గారు చాలా సార్లు దీనికి కొంతైనా పరిస్కారం కోసం ప్రతి సంవత్సరం తన సమయం కొంత దీనిమీదనే పెడతానని చెప్పారు. మరొక చివరి విషయం ఏమంటే మనదేశంలో లాక్ డౌన్ అని ప్రకటన రాగానే లండన్ లో ఉండే భాను ప్రియా గారి నుండి ఫోన్ కొండల్ అన్న లాక్ డౌన్ అంటే మరి సుగ్గీ కి వెళ్లిన వారి పరిస్థితి ఏమిటి అని, ఒక్కసారి అధ్యయనం చేయటానికి వచ్చిన భానుప్రియ గారికి ఉన్న ఆలోచన ఓట్లు వేయుంచుకునే వారికి వచ్చింటే వలస కార్మికులకు ఇన్ని కష్టాలు ఉండకపోవు.సరే ఆ భానుప్రియ గారు మిత్రుడు నరసింహ ద్వారా ఆ 52 కుటుంబాలకు 10 రోజులకు సరిపడే నిత్యావసర వస్తువులు అందజేసి ప్రస్తుతానికి కొంత ధైర్యాన్ని ఇచ్చారు. గత వారం రోజుల నుండి వలస కార్మికుల సమస్యల గురించి అధికారులతో ఎప్పటికప్పుడు సమన్వయము చేసే టీం లో చాలా చురుకైన పాత్ర పోషిస్తున్నారు.ధన్యవాదాలు భానుప్రియ గారు.

3.”మూడవ సంఘటన”:సాయంత్రం మిత్రుడు నవీన్ నుండి ఫోన్,కొండల్ వనపర్తి లో ఉత్తర ప్రదేశ్ నుండి వచ్చిన ఒక కుటుంబం లాక్ డౌన్ కారణంగా చాలా ఇబ్బందులలో ఉన్నారట, మనకు ఎవరైనా తెలిసిన వారు ఉన్నారా అని, నేను ఆ సమయంలో ఒక రైతు ఆత్మహత్య కుటుంబం లోని అబ్బాయి ఖాసీం గుర్తుకు వచ్చి ఫోన్ చేసాను,అన్నా నాకు హిందీ సరిగా రాదు,వచ్చిన వారితో మాట్లాడించి కానీ వారికీ ఏమి కావాలో తెలుసుకుని ఉదయం 7 గంటలకు ఆ కుటుంబం దగ్గర ఉంటానని హామీ ఇచ్చారు.వారి గ్రామంలో హిందీ వచ్చిన వారి దగ్గరికి వెళ్లి వారికి ఫోన్ చేయించి ఏమి సరుకులు అవసరం ఉందొ రాయించుకున్నారు. రేపు ఉదయం 7 గంటలకల్లా సరుకు వారికి అందజేసి వారికి ఇంకా ఏదైనా సమస్య ఉంటే కనుక్కుని వస్తాను అన్న అని చెప్పారు. ధన్యవాదాలు ఖాసీం.

Translation

It makes us extremely happy when our existing network comes in handy to support vulnerable families during difficult situations. 

Three such incidents happened today.

First incident: A call came from Kiran Anna shortly after 10.30 pm. In fact, 93 migrant laborers from Srikakulam district near Gudivada in Krishna district were in a lot of trouble due to the sudden lockdown. In essence, if someone could go to them and provide them with the essentials for 10 days then it would provide them a certain amount of relief and courage. It was almost 11 pm, I called a friend in Machilipatnam and it was already late so they did not answer my call. Then I called another friend and got the phone is switched off message. I called another two friends in the same district, Nuzvidu, and this time both responded and communicated that they had friends near Gudivada and that they would reach out to them early in the morning. 

Meanwhile the migrants were facing daily challenges without basic supplies so I started to make the calls from 7 am onwards. A friend introduced her two friends near Gudivada who then went and provided the 93 stranded people with 10 days’ worth of basic supplies. They also assured them that they are here to help them till things settle down and that they will be able to travel back to their villages once the lockdown is lifted. When I thanked these friends, they offered to work with us in the future as they enjoyed working with us and this made us even more delighted.

Second incident: Thousands of Suggi (migrant) workers come to the Achampeta Zone in Guntur district regularly. Due to the sudden lockdown they were stuck and could not travel back to their homes. As if this wasn’t sad enough, the huts where 52 migrant worker families were living caught on fire and damaged all the supplies that they had. Narasimha, a friend of the local farmer’s Swarajya Forum said the problem of these families was much worse. His message was that it would be great  if someone could rescue these families and Ms. Bhanupriya from London responded to this sentiment. 

The interesting this is that Ms Bhanupriya has spent ten days in the past year researching these migrant workers who travelled the districts of Guntur, Kurnool, Kadapa, Prakasam and Anantapur and wrote a big story for India Spend magazine. Having seen the challenges these workers encounter, she pledged to commit a part of her time for this cause.  Importantly, she called immediately as soon as India declared lockdown to enquire about the plight of migrant workers due to this lockdown. If only the leaders who vie for the votes of these migrant workers had the concern that Ms.Bhanupriya expressed, the migrant workers wouldn’t be in this situation!

Well, Bhanupriya’s friend Narasimha has provided these 52 families with essentials for 10 days and given them some encouragement. Since last week, he has been playing an active role in the team that coordinates with the authorities on the issues of migrant workers. Thanks to Ms.Bhanupriya.

 

Third incident: Received a call in the evening, from a friend Naveen enquiring if I knew anyone that could help a family from Uttar Pradesh now in Vanaparthi and in a lot of trouble due to the sudden lockdown. I remembered a farmer’s son Qasim who suffered from farmer suicide and called him. However, he said that he couldn’t speak Hindi fluently, but assured me that he would talk to those who can speak Hindi in the morning and find out what this family’s needs are. As promised he reached out to the people who could speak Hindi to communicate with the family to learn what supplies were needed for this family.  He then assured that the requested goods will be delivered to them by 7 am the next day and also would find out if they had any other problems.
