May 2 — Cyclone Fani, a category 4 storm with wind speeds in range 150-200 kmph is about to make landfall in the western coast of India between Puri and Gopalpur in the state of Odisha. Once it makes landfall it is expected to move North-North East towards West Bengal.
The eye of the cyclone is 30 Km in diameter, and the arms would have a similar width as well, and it is moving at 20 kmph — so once the impact starts in a region on the direct path of the storm, it is best to stay indoors for a few hours until the eye and the arms of the cyclone pass.
The IMD has stated that there can be “total destruction” of thatched homes or kutcha homes.
To save lives we urge the governments of Odisha and West Bengal to ensure that schools and panchayat offices are kept open to people in villages so that they may take shelter there. These will especially be useful for people living in thatched homes, in villages where there are no other cyclone shelters.
Disasters are a time that bring out the best in people. Instead of waiting till the disaster strikes and helping each other, we can also do so when it is striking. We urge people living in pakka homes to invite one or two families living in katcha thatched homes to their houses for shelter.
We pray that everyone stays safe and the calamity passes.
