Cyclone Remal- Appeal to Donors

sunderban-rebuild-embank

Cyclone Remal made landfall on the islands of Sundarbans the last week of May, bringing very heavy rainfall and destructive wind gusts. Mud homes collapsed, farm lands were inundated and a large number of trees fell down. We were in constant touch with the people of Sundarbans and they said they had not witnessed a storm that lasted this long. The cyclone moved inland causing flooding and destruction in Assam, Manipur and Mizoram.

With support from AID, our partner Mukti, has distributed 700 tarpaulins, organized cooked food for 3000 people in various flood centers and distributed ration to vulnerable families. As people are working hard to get back to normal life, there is an urgent need to support rehabilitation and rebuilding of homes, farms and other  livelihoods.

With your support, people can rebuild their lives in Sundarbans and elsewhere. AID’s All India Relief Fund allows us to act immediately to support urgent relief of food, drinking water and shelter. Our partner Mukti started relief work as soon as the storm moved away.

AID has been working with its partners in Sundarbans since 2009, when cyclone Aila devastated the region. For more than a decade AID and its partners worked with farmers on sustainable organic agriculture. While those initiatives have become self-sufficient, we continue to work on community led mangrove plantation and Learning Centers for children.

Climate crisis is increasing the intensity and frequency of storms and extreme weather across the world. Your support enables us to act immediately and support the communities as they rebuild after disasters.
