How can one respond to distress calls when ordered to stay home? Fielding more than 100 calls every day, a network of volunteers throughout Telangana are finding ways to reach those in need. Ravi Kanneganti, of Rythu Swarajya Vedika, reflects on how much work can one phone do?

Kondal Reddy receives calls from people asking help for migrant workers stranded in various parts of Andhra and Telangana, and works the phones till he can find someone to deliver supplies and offer reassuring words, especially to those who are from out of state and speak a different language.

కొంత మంది యువ సామాజిక కార్యకర్తలను చూసినప్పుడు మనలో మరింత పట్టుదల, పని చేయాలనే తపన పెరుగుతుంది. ఈ రోజు ఉదయం రవి అన్న నుండి ఫోన్, కొండల్ చాలామంది వలస కార్మికులకు నిత్య అవసర సరుకులు అందజేయాలి, 10 గంటలకు అంతా ఒక పాయింట్ కు చేరుకోమని చెప్పారు. మాది కొన్ని కారణాల వలన గంట ఆలస్యం అయి 11 గంటలకు అక్కడికి చేరుకున్నాము.ఆచార్యం అనిపించింది యువ కార్యకర్తలు పనిలో నిమగ్నమై ఉన్నారు . వచ్చిన ఆహార సరుకులు లోడ్ దించుకోవటం , భాదిత కుటుంబాలకోసం వాటిని సరుకులు ప్యాక్ చేయటం అంతా చకచక జరిగిపోతుంది.ప్రతి వారు అన్ని ఆగోగ్య జాగ్రత్తలు పాటిస్తూ ఎవరి పని వారు చేసుకుపోతున్నారు. అక్కడి నుండి మరొక రూమ్ లోకి వెళ్లేసరికి కొంత సీనియర్స్ అందరూ ఏ ప్రాంతానికి ఎంతమందికి నిత్యావసర వస్తువులు ఎలా చేరవేయాలా అని పూర్తిగా సమన్వయం చేస్తూ ఉన్నారు. కొంత మంది లాప్ టాప్ లలో చేయవలసిన పనిని,అయిపోయిన పనిని, రేపటి పనిని సమన్వయము చేస్తూ అందరికి పని పురమాయిస్తూ ఉన్నారు. మధ్యాహ్నం తర్వాత నేను మిత్రుడు యాదవ రెడ్డి నాచారం,ఉప్పల్,బోడుప్పల్ ప్రాంతంలో ఉన్న 45 వలస కుటుంబాలకు నిత్యావసర వస్తువులు తీసుకుపోయే భాద్యత తీసుకున్నాము. నేను ప్యాకింగ్ ఆలస్యం అవుతుందేమో అనుకున్నాను. జస్ట్ 30 నిమిషాల్లో యువ కార్యకర్తలు మా ట్రాలీ కి సరుకు నింపారు. మేము ఉప్పల్ లో ఉత్తర ప్రదేశ్ కుటుంబాలకు సరుకు డెలివరీ చేస్తున్న సమయంలో ఇంకా చాలా మంది ఉత్తర ప్రదేశ్ వారు వచ్చి మాకు కూడా ఎవరి నుండి ఏ సహకారం అందలేదని మాకు కూడా ఏమైనా చేయండి అన్నారు.వీలైతే చూస్తామని పేర్లు నోట్ చేసుకున్నాము. ప్రభుత్వం నుండి రేషన్,కొంత నగదు ఇప్పటి వరకు అందలేదని రేపు ఇస్తారని అంటున్నారని చెప్పారు. ఈ విషయంలో ప్రభుత్వ అధికారులు చాలా చాలా త్వరగా స్పందిస్తారని ఆశిద్దాము. సరే ఈ సమయంలో ఇలా యువ కార్యకర్తలు వారిని గైడ్ చేసే సీనియర్ లు కో ఆర్డినేషన్ చేస్తూ పూనుకోవటం కారణంగా కొంత మంది వలస కార్మికులకైనా ఏదో కొద్దిగా తోడుగా ఉంటున్నాము అనే తృప్తి ఉంటుంది.
Translation: When we watch the young dedicated volunteers working very systematically, we also get motivated to do more. We got a phone call from Ravi anna today saying Kondal, we need to make sure migrant workers’ daily needs are being met.
We were told to assemble at one place at 10AM. We got there at 11AM. We were very surprised to find the young volunteers dedicated to helping them were very seriously focussed in their work. Everything is moving fast – downloading the supplies from the truck, packing carefully for each person/family based on their needs etc.
Everyone is taking measures to take care of themselves while doing their jobs.
When we went to another room we saw some experienced older people assembled there. They were planning strategies thinking about how to coordinate and distribute to various areas, what their individual needs are and how many people in each area etc,
Some are collecting data on their lap- tops regarding details about what were already done, what is currently being processed, what products they need to get for next day’s distribution etc. They were assigning tasks to other volunteers.
In the afternoon some of us took responsibility to distribute supplies to Nacharam, Uppall, Boddupalli areas to 45 families. I thought packing might take more time and we might be delayed. But the young volunteers took charge and in just 30 minutes filled the truck!
While we were delivering to North Indian families in Uppal, more people came and told us they were not getting any supplies and asked us if we could help them too. We said we would try. We got their names. They told us that they heard that they were going to get some supplies and money from the government and it might come the next day.
Let us hope that the government will act quickly. At least we can be somewhat satisfied since we are able to take care of some migrant workers in their time of need, thanks to the well coordinated contributions of all of our volunteers!
