Watch the 4 minute video, get to know the Agariya families and see the success of the pilot solar pump project, based on which we are now expanding to 30 more Agariya families.
$2250/solar pumpDonate to Solar Fund
The Solar Pump Fund supports “Agariyas” (Salt workers) in Little Rann of Kutch to replace highly polluting inefficient diesel pumps with eco-friendly Solar energy pumps and bring down the cost of salt production in a sustainable manner. The use of solar pumps will help a salt farmer save an average of $700 to $1000/yr for 10-12 years. The support of $2250/solar-pump when repaid by the Agariya family will be used to provide support to more farmers and for purposes decided jointly with AID.
30 Agariya families are looking for support from AID for solar pumps. Rajesh bhai (in video) and his colleagues at Vikas and Janpath (AID partner NGOs) will help enable these.
Several AID-chapters have together approved support for about half of them and AID is looking for donations for the remaining 15 pumps.
Each Agariya family will be given a loan of Rs 1,50,000 (about $2250) by AID’s partner-NGO Vikas. Along with their Rs 30,000 this enables them to get the solar system with installation and insurance.
Every Agariya family pumps 100,000 liters of saline water per day. They currently use diesel pumps. When they switch to solar it will save them $700-1000 per year.
This will enable them to repay the loan in 3 years to Vikas which will be given to more Agariyas to get more solar pumps as well as for other purposes collectively determined by AID, Janpath and Vikas.
Your support enables the Agariya families to stand on their own feet and show the way for 10,000 other Agariyas doing the same work to get out of the recurring diesel expenditure and move to a more efficient renewable energy source.
Those who donate to the Solar Pump Fund will be able to contact the Agariya families who are using the pumps over the next 3 years.
