Updates from Gosaba Block from Mandra Lions Club

Mandra Lions Club based in Purulia has been a long time partner of AID. In a network meeting of Rights and Equity for All on the 31st of May, representatives from 14 districts of West Bengal decided to meet again the next day in South 24 Parganas, where they formed a team of 30 volunteers drawn from local NGOs and CBOs (Community Based Organisations). They decided to work in an area which had not seen any external intervention and help either from the civil society or the Government. Two Gram Panchayats of Bally I and Bally II were chosen in Gosaba block. Mandra has already given Rs. 50,000 to the volunteers to start the relief efforts.

The 2 GPs cover 5 villages with an approximate population of 24000.

Eighteen people have died here so far and many villages are still under water. Close to 150000 homes have been destroyed.

The volunteers will be transporting and distributing clean drinking water, food and basic medical supplies.
