As you are aware, many parts of South Bengal have sustained heavy losses where cyclone Aila hit yesterday (25th May 2009). Millions of people have been rendered homeless since their homes have either been washed away by the storm or due to severe flooding in these areas. It is necessary to provide URGENT relief to these cyclone affected people. MUKTI has immediately come forward for help and our volunteers have started rehabilitation work from today morning in all areas where MUKTI has its presence. The immediate need is to move these stranded people to higher ground and to provide them food and potable water.

AID has worked previously in Sunderbans with these groups. Here are pictures of previous visit of AID-Boston volunteer Somnath Mukherjee to Sunderbans with the group MUKTI. At the time of disasters, for Relief and Rehabilitation work AID tries to establish collaborations through its partners and groups who work in the region, and AID volunteers who have visited and know the region, so that the R & R work is more effective.
