After six months of intense discussions amongst the AID/ASHA volunteers in several chapters of the US who belong to different religious and social Indian backgrounds and speak different languages, AID women has been able to compile the FAQs on gender inequality in Indian marriages and specifically on the tradition of dowry exchange, keeping the variety in India's cultural heritage in mind. Just as we found that "oppression of women" persists in all parts of India across ethnic divisions, we also believe that the "voice to protest" oppression is universal and will leap across all such cultural boundaries [more]

The recent incidents of violence in Gujarat have been deeply distressing. AID clearly and unambiguously condemns what happened in Godhra and the communal carnage that has followed. Volunteers across the United States and in India have been extremely concerned by the loss of life, property and livelihoods. Within a few days of the onset of violence, we gave a public call for Fast for Peace and Communal Harmony. Hundreds of members of the public signed for the fast or lighting candles in solidarity from all over the world. (For more information, please visit www.aidindia.org/fastforpeace).

The damage caused by the violence has been compounded by the fact that Gujarat was barely recovering from last year's earthquake. We had pledged to rebuild local communities in Gujarat that were devastated by the earthquake, and we realize that the recent incidents have shattered the very foundations of these -Raju Patil, AID-Pittsburgh - communities. The need for funds and community mobilization is immense. We actively solicit your support to provide relief and rehabilitation to the affected people.

An earth quake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit the western state of Gujarat in India on the 26th of January. Tremors were felt as far as the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal in the north, Madras in the south and Pakistan in the west. The response for AID's call for support was overwhelming. We supported short term relief efforts through credible NGOs and there is lot to rebuild. AID has been working on the long-term relief efforts. [more]

The aftermath of the cyclone has been a particularly overwhelming experience for the people affected. AID was fortunate enough to have been working with a fe w efficient and credible Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Orissa prior t o the cyclone.Through generous donations to the AID Orissa cyclone relief fund, we were able to fund emergency relief efforts by these groups and some other goo d groups from states neighbouring Orissa. In the past few months, we have been c oncentrating on long-term rebuilding and livelihood restoration efforts being un dertaken by these NGOs...[more]
