Introducing Haybox in Orissa Manufacturing and selling hay boxes can be a good livelihood activity for women in the villages and also supports bamboo weavers if the product can be marketed well.
My Journey As a Chemical Engineer, I feel very much disturbed that the
contribution from us has been very less [mostly negligible] to overcome
such problems.

| NREGA Exploits: Payments for 2008 still pending! |
Uppadi Hakkula Sadhana Commitee Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam Districts. Phone: 9908974538, 08942-271464 Villagers exploited by NREGA rally in Srikakulam Payments for work they did in 2008 still pending. Over 200 villagers coming equally from tribal and non-tribal villages of Ponduru, Santakaviti, Etcharla, Seetampeta, Kothuru, Heeramandalam and Bhamini manals in Srikakulam district took out a rally across the strreets of Srikakulam and met with the collector to seek proper implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. With less than 2 months remaining for the end of the finacial year 2008-09, they wondered how 100 days of work would be possible as even official data indicates that only 30 days of work have been given in the 10 months that have passed. They seeked immediate starting of the NREGA works that have been put on a hold in the entire state. Moreover village after village complained that wages were not paid fully for works done in summer of 2008. Does the governement expect people to work without wages they asked, pointing to increase in costs of essential items and inflation, that have caused the government to increase wages for state employees in the service sector while leaving those depending on daily wage labour in a lurch. The said proportionally NREGA wages must be increased from Rs 80 to Rs 120 per day. Siripuram villagers expressed anger and disgust at the fact that in their village payments havent yet been made to 500 families who worked for about 20 days each in the months of April and May of 2008. After they lodged complaints in AUgust pay orders were released for about half of these days. But neither those amounts have reached the villagers completely nor have they heard about the remaining days. The story was the similar in several other villages in Ponduru and Santakavita mandalams like Dalavalasa and Krishnapuram and Gunabadra and Pulipuuta villages of Kothuru and Seetampeta mandals. Carrying banners of "Uppadi Hakkula Sadhana Commitee" villagers in Vishakapatnam and Srikakulam disticts are demanding their rights under NREGA along with Andhra Pradesh Vysvasaya Vrithidharulu Sangham (APVVU), AID-India and Human Rights Forum. -- Ajay Kumar, APVVU, Uppadi Hakkula Sadhana Committee Phone -- .9908974538 M Suryanarayana, AID-India, Uppadi Hakkula Sadhana Commitee.
