| Relief and Rehabilitation of Gothikoya tribals |
|
Andhra Pradesh (Khammam district) and Chhattisgarh (Dantewada and Bastar district) states share a common boundary which is densely covered by reserve forests. The main dwellers of these forests are Gothikoyas and koyas. These tribes are frequently displaced from their homes due to violence that erupts between Maoists and the state sponsored Salwa Judum groups. Legally referred to as "Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), they are not provided relief by either of the state governments and have been struggling for survival and basic rights. These displaced people have no rights over the lands they inhabit right now and are therefore unable to cultivate any crops. Their children suffer from severe malnutrition. Due to their vulnerable position, they do not have access to some of the most basic necessities like clean water, food, shelter and work for survival. ASDS (Agriculture and Social Development Society) is a local NGO established in 1985 that has been working on tribal rights for several years. ASDS has provided some immediate food grain relief and support to the people that has achieved marked improvement in the health of the malnourished children. AID is providing additional support to the Gothikoya tribes. AID is also working with ASDS and another long-term partner NGO APVVU in addressing some of the immediate and long term issues of the refugee tribes. Some of the ongoing and future activities that we will be supporting are as follows. Firstly Ambali Kendra" or "Cereal Center" will be set up to provide food for the people. Further, local NGO groups have already started to prepare lists of people living in each village to help them to apply for NREGA, ration, and other benefits. ASDS and other organizations are also working with the local officials to obtain rights for the refugee tribes to carry out some food cultivation. |
