The new calendars are here! And people can't stop talking about them! ![]() Volunteers rush out to the parking lot upon hearing that the new AID 2013 Calendars have arrived. (Or was it to meet Donor Relations Coordinator Naga who drove through North and South Carolina, carrying calendars to chapters?) Ooohs and Aaahs filled the moonlit parking lot near the university apartment complex as volunteers turned the pages to see breathtaking and thought-provoking examples of holistic and just development and the people who pedal the wheels of sustainability. People People appreciated the
efforts of the health workers, reaching interior areas on bicycle, as
well as the man who bartered recyclables for household goods, and the
arduous uphill climb of those carrying coals, using only their own
energy to bring fuel to others.
Saniya
from Durham drew parallels between their struggles and those of her own
parents and grandparents who paved the way for their children to reach
for greater opportunities, and expressed hopes that the calendar would
remind all of us to join hands with those working for better life and
livelihood for all.
Other volunteers pedalled down Memory Lane as they turned the pages of 2013 AID Calendar: Pedaling the Wheels of Sustainability.
Arati
from Clemson remarked, "It reminds me of my childhood, my brother and I
used to cycle to school, it would take a long time and it was the only
time we got to enjoy conversations with each other."
Professor
Harish Cherukuri recalled how he used to commute from Kukatpally to the
central part of Hyderabad on a bicycle, even though he did not own one.
"I would tell them, "Give me a lift. I will ride the bike, you sit in
the back."
A
senior Charlotte volunteer affectionately called "Dadaji" shared his
own story of commuting on bicycle for 60 years of his life. Some
students had themselves come to the meeting on bicycles. Some young
families talked about their own plans for getting their kids a bicycle,
carrying on the tradition to the next generation.
Take
calendars to events, parties, local Indian stores, bookstores, cycle
rallies, and spread the word about AID ... pedaling towards
sustainability.
