One for India
PROGRAM

1. Welcome note
2. Opening Vocal recital by Arijit Mahalanabis (40min)

Hindustani music recitals are comprised of Raag renditions. The artist may choose to present a particular Raag considering the time of the recital or even the season. A Raag is a multidimensional framework defined by certain notes and phrases. Typically, the recital begins with Aalap which is an exposition of a Raag to give the audience a glimpse of its overall personality. The rendition then progresses to a composition framed in a rhythmic cycle, provided by the Tabla accompaniment. The title of this concert, Avartan, refers to one rhythmic cycle.

3. Short presentation about Association for India's Development
4. Short Break
5. Sitar Recital by Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan (90min)

Sitar recital typically follows the Alap, Jod, Jhala and Composition format. Jod is the unmetered rendition of the Raag where the rhythm starts becoming evident. It is followed by the Jhala in which the constant repetition of pitches including the drone creates a driving rhythm. The composition set to a rhythmic cycle (Taal) accompanied by the Tabla concludes the recital.

6. Vote of thanks
